Understands the basic elements of system safety engineering to include hazard analyses, hazard categorization (in terms of severity and likelihood), end effects, causal analyses, mitigation requirements identification, documentation, tracking and implementing, and residual risk assessment. Typically interfaces with hardware and software design engineering and test engineering to include Integrated Product Teams (IPT). Typical analyses performed include: functional analyses, hazard analyses, safety requirements analyses, hazard mitigation, safety risk assessments, reliability analyses, and system residual risk assessments. Reviews and evaluates systems and software for adherence to government or commercial directives, standards, guidelines, and criteria concerning software safety and systems safety. Confirms design mitigations are captured in the design and its documentation and verifies implementation as appropriate. Performs minimal safety program management tasks including progress reports and tracking schedules. Ancillary duties include tasks associated with environmental health and safety (ESH), hazardous materials minimization, industrial hygiene, human factors, reliability engineering, explosive safety, nuclear safety, directed energy (laser) safety, and test range safety. DSS Responsibilities: The System Safety Engineer provides technical expertise to Systems Engineers to standardize the integration of all aspects of the MIL-STD-882D throughout Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC) Acquisition Programs. System Safety process implementation across acquisition efforts includes but is not limited to the following activities: -       Implement Command Safety policies, orders, instructions-       Perform Identification of system mishaps and hazards-       Perform risk analysis of hazards to personnel, equipment and the environment-       Develop mitigation requirements-       Develop implementation/verification strategies-       Prepare risk acceptance documentation for risks to personnel, equipment and the environment-       Prepare Safety Releases and Operational Test Readiness Certification letters-       Prepare environmental documentation including National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Programmatic Environment Safety and Occupational Health Evaluations (PESHE)-       Prepare lithium battery certifications and obtain safety review board approvals-       Maintain Hazard Tracking System and safety documentation on ESOH shared drive and ESOH archive-       Represent the Program Manager’s interests as the Principal for Environment, Safety and Occupational Health (PESOH)-       Support development/implementation of ESOH processes, metrics-       Support all customer meetings as required The System Safety Engineer provides leadership to establish and conduct Program Environmental Safety and Occupational Health Working Groups (ESOHWG) and to conduct System Safety Working Groups (SSWGs) to ensure integration of ESOH risk management in accordance with Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC) Order 5090, MCSC Order 5100.29B and MCSC Order 3900.10. The System Safety Engineer produces timely, accurate ESOH output documents in support of program events, program decisions and other requirements as needed. Qualifications: Generally requires a Bachelors degree and 5 or more years of related experience with increasing responsibility. A Masters degree, Certified Safety Professional status, and supervisory and management experience is preferred. Candidates for this position will be subject to a government background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. US Citizenship required.
