Professionals employed in quality control management positions are responsible for supervising a variety of tasks related to quality processes and activities.  Quality control managers may be accountable for managing the actions of an entire department or a specific area.  No matter their specific station, their main goal is to maintain quality goods throughout production, shipment, and customer acceptance.  They are required to follow a variety of pre-established guidelines, but procedures may be altered in order to increase productivity, quality, or efficiency.  QC managers perform audits and assist with process alterations when necessary and are also responsible for training employees and following up on corrective measures. 

Professionals interested in quality manager employment are often required to undergo four years of formal education and gain on the job experience before entering a management position.  Associates are expected to act as a liaison among administration, general laborers, regulatory agencies, and subcontractors, so excellent negotiation and communication skills are mandatory.  Due to the constant changing of government regulations and requirements, professionals need to continually adapt to current systems in order to accommodate modifications. 

Quality control managers spend their time between an office, traveling to visit customers, and the factory floor.  They must follow safety regulations when in production areas to ensure individual and coworker safety.  Professionals employed in these positions continually gain more responsibilities as restructuring eliminates numerous other professionals.  Due to the additional responsibilities they are assigned and regular deadlines that must be met, quality control managers may experience a great deal of stress.  Managers are expected to be involved with all processes and may be on call, work evening shifts, or work exceptionally long hours. 

Approximately 160,000 professionals were employed in production management careers in 2004.  Although demands for quality control are expected to continually increase, professionals in this field are predicted to experience overall declines in occupational growth, mainly due to increased technology and automation.  A number of replacement openings are expected through 2014, and professionals with a bachelor’s to master’s education will experience the best overall opportunities.  Depending on a candidate’s education and employment experience, earning potential can range from $43,600 to $123,000 per year, according to recent studies.
